Teaching Little Learners Big Lessons About Safety

Oct 29, 2026 | News and Information

PEACE, Inc. Roxboro Head Start recently hosted its Pumpkins and Poisons event, bringing children and parents together for an afternoon of creativity, family engagement, and important safety education. Families worked together to decorate pumpkins with colorful paints, giving children a chance to express their creativity while enjoying a fun seasonal activity.

After the pumpkin decorating, Nurse Ryann visited the classrooms to lead an important lesson about household safety. She showed the children examples of common household products alongside food and candy items that might look similar. Through this hands-on activity, children learned that just because something looks like food or a tasty treat does not mean it is safe to eat or drink.

The lesson reinforced an important safety habit: children should never eat or drink anything without first asking a trusted adult. Even everyday household products can be dangerous if mistaken for food or beverages. By combining a fun family activity with age-appropriate safety education, Roxboro Head Start helped children learn an important lesson they can carry with them beyond the classroom.
